QEV-3 & QEV-3D

Read more about our 2020-2021 Electric Competition car, QEV-3 and our 2022-2024 Autonomous Competition car QEV-3D

2020 was the start of a new era for the team; our electrical team developed significantly, being joined by highly motivated individuals including our new electrical supervisor, Dr. Mark Broadmeadow. This much-needed support allowed our team to push to reach the incredible milestone of getting our third iteration of electric vehicle driving; successfully completing its first carpark test and track day with flying colours. We officially gained the title of the first Australian Formula SAE team to complete a four-wheel-drive electric vehicle. Lando was also QUT Motorsport’s first car to have a carbon fibre chassis with the help of a new partner, LSM Advanced Composites. This allowed us to save half the weight of our 2019 car, QEV-2, saving a total of 25 kg! Another exciting partnership with BMW Bodyshop allowed us to bring our ambitious livery concept to life in dedication to our Vehicle Dynamics Lead, Tom Hardyman. Due to COVID-19, the official Formula SAE competition dynamic events were cancelled, however, a local competition was held with Griffith and UQ Racing teams. Unfortunately due to electrical issues, we were not able to compete dynamically however we did pass scrutineering which was a major highlight and goal; it was the first time that a QUT Motorsport electric car has passed scrutineering at competition. We managed to do the same at the Official Formula SAE Online Competition and placed 2nd in the Design Event, 2nd in the Cost Event and 5th in the Business Presentation Event. Our team scored the highest amount of points in the competition in a field of 14 teams!

Since 2022, Lando has been the team’s autonomous car. With QEV-3D, the team has competed in two competitions and is about to compete in its third and final competition. In 2022, the team became the first Australian autonomous car on track. The team was also awarded the 2022 Motorsport Australia Inspiring Spirit Award for their resilience at the competition. In 2023, the team continued into the competition, ready to hit the track once again. At a competition in 2023, the team entered into AV statics for the first time; however, unfortunately, the car did not complete AV scrutineering in time. Moving into 2024, QEV-3D is now the most reliable it has ever been. The team is excited as they look forward to showcasing Lando for the last time in Melbourne, aiming to demonstrate that QEV-3D is the best AV car in Australia.
