Earlier this year, we were invited to write an article about our team and how we overcame the technical challenge of creating a custom gearbox through our collaboration with KISSsoft. This partnership allowed us to create custom gear tooth profiles, optimising contact ratios and reducing backlash, streamlining our workflow and efficiency. Recently, the Italian technical magazine InMotion published our article in their September 2023 issue.

This achievement fills our team with immense pride, and we’re extremely grateful to see our project being highlighted globally!

Several members of the QUT Motorsport team had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Girls on Track events hosted over two-days at Triple Eight Race Engineering and Queensland Raceway. Over the course of those few days, our team had the privilege of visiting Triple Eight Race Engineering and getting an exclusive behind-the-scenes garage tour. At these events, our members had the chance to hear the inspiring stories of women who are currently making waves in the industry.

In addition to these experiences, QUT Motorsport members Aqua, Cecilia, Emily, and Mackenzie spent time working with school-aged students in the Girls on Track Inspire program. This program aims to inspire an enthusiasm for STEM and motorsport among the upcoming generation, with the ultimate goal of boosting female participation in these fields.

A big thank-you to Motorsport Australia and Girls on Track for allowing us to be a part of the event and to Priyanka Chanda for all her dedicated efforts to get us involved. Programs like these are instrumental in promoting inclusion and diversity within the motorsport industry as well as inspiring the next generation to become involved. At QUT Motorsport, we are committed to the same cause, empowering our members through the development of our Women in Motorsport program.

QUT Motorsport was grateful to be part of the QUT

QUT Motorsport was grateful to be part of the QUT Open Day held on Sunday 30th of July which provided a comprehensive and enlightening experience for prospective students, visitors and families.

The event highlighted our remarkable efforts in fields such as Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Industrial Design and Business. Our team, solely composed of undergraduate students, showcased our cutting-edge facilities, technical accomplishments and innovative designs throughout the day.

Open Day attendees had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes with the team, with personalised guided lab tours allowing future QUT students to engage with our members. Additionally, our Open Day Stall setup outside the “Your Future Career in Engineering” Seminar further engaged future QUT Students.

We hope to welcome some of these students into QUT Motorsport soon!

The test session drivers included our members: Mackenzie, Ryan, Jacques, George, Shaq, Matt and Austin. Revving up our engineering prowess! 🚀🔧✨

A day filled with track data validation, sensor testing, and exhilarating moments. Team morale soared as we witnessed “Ozanne”, our 2012 combustion car, out on track again. Ozanne is a testament to the team’s hard work and relentless dedication, with over a decade of maintenance and development work being conducted on our former Formula SAE entrant, now a testing vehicle. Countless hours were spent fine-tuning the car setup, both before and during the day, thanks to the incredible collaboration between QUT Motorsport members and alumni, and students from QUT’s EGB415 - Motor Racing Vehicle Design unit.

EGB415 students gained invaluable real-world experience, delving into the exciting realm of automotive engineering. It was a sight to behold as they observed how various setups, from suspension spring rates to tire pressures and aerodynamic changes influenced the car's performance on the track. But the excitement didn’t stop there! We had the privilege of having our very own lab custodian, Ash, and EGB415 Unit Coordinator, Cameron, get behind the wheel of our car.

We even had the chance to conduct some aero testing to push the boundaries further. Our software also underwent rigorous validation, utilising MoTeC systems and other cutting-edge tools. A special highlight was the visit of esteemed alumni and Triple Eight Racing Data Engineer, Isaac Baldry, who graciously shared his expertise in data collection with our enthusiastic students. Together, we're shaping the future of automotive innovation! 🏎️💡👨‍🔬

Recently we had the opportunity to use QUT’s on-campus wind tunnel to test the functionality and accuracy of our pitot tube sensors. The aim of this was to improve their ability in recording the relative air speed across the vehicle and to better validate the on-track performance of our aerodynamics package.

Validating the accuracy of the pitot tube not only helps our aerodynamics team, but our software team will also use the data to substantiate and test our Vehicle Control Units and data acquisition system to further improve the performance of QEV-4 and beyond!

On behalf of the entire QUT Motorsport team, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude to QUT Motorsport Alumni for joining us at our recent Alumni BBQ.

It was a pleasure to catch up with you all and hear about your latest endeavours, as well as reminisce about our time together in the lab and on the track. We hope that you enjoyed the day as much as we did, and that it provided an opportunity to reconnect and strengthen the bonds that we share as a team.

In addition to lunch, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to play a few games of volleyball together. It was a great way to unwind, have some fun, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Thank you to @qldraceway for their generous and unwavering support. Developing and testing an experimental vehicle is fast paced with ever evolving testing requirements and plans. Queensland Raceway is always volunteering their track time and facilities which makes the exciting work we do possible.

We’ve recently had our first track day of the year where we got to run our first driverless operation since competition last year. We were able to test and validate work that our new members had been developing in Design Camp, and recorded a variety of on-track data for offline tuning. Another great achievement from this day involved the testing of a new control system, resulting in faster vehicle reaction times, as well as overhaul of localisation using our updated navigation system. We were also able to complete our first fully rules-compliant emergency brake test, setting us in good stead for this year’s competition 🥳

Last week at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix,

Last week at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, we had the privilege of having 3 current QUT Motorsport members attend the FIA Girls on Track Career Development and Mentoring Event hosted by @motorsport.australia.

From 595 applicants, 25 young women were selected to experience workshops with Girls on Track ambassadors, a networking lunch with representatives across various roles in the industry, and garage tours and workshops with the @alfaromeostake and @williamsracing teams. Aqua, Emily, and Lucy gained valuable insights into the motorsport industry and career pathways and were given the opportunity to connect with many female motorsport ambassadors currently working in the industry. Their highlights included time spent in the F1 Paddock, workshops with the Alfa Romeo engineers and drivers, and catching a glimpse of the level of detail required for a successful Grand Prix weekend!

It is programs such as FIA Girls on Track that are driving inclusion and diversity within the motorsport industry, and at QUT Motorsport we strive to do the same by providing our members with opportunities through developing our Women in Motorsport program.

This week, QUT Motorsport says farewell to Dr. Mar

This week, QUT Motorsport says farewell to Dr. Mark Broadmeadow as he embarks on his own new ventures.

Mark has been heavily involved with the team since 2020 and through his continuous guidance, participation, and feedback, has helped advance the car to its highest potential. He’s been a valued mentor to the team throughout the development and refinement of QEV-3, QEV-3D, and QEV-4’s electrical and software systems.

Upon asking QUT Motorsport members about Mark’s impact on the team, one member explained, “[his] effort and dedication to the team went above and beyond what would ever have been expected of an academic supervisor. The result is the realisation of so many accomplishments never thought possible before. Thank you for your hard work, and best wishes for what lies next.”

On behalf of the QUTMS team, thank you Mark and we wish you all the best for where your future takes you and we hope to see you again soon!
